Is Door to Door Car Transport Worth the Extra Cost

Is Door to Door Car Transport Worth the Extra Cost?

June 27, 2026 Laisha Bednar

It’s a question we hear almost every day.

A customer receives two transport quotes. One includes collection and delivery from their nominated addresses, while the other requires vehicle drop-off and collection from transport depots. The price difference isn’t usually huge, but it’s enough to make people stop and ask whether the extra cost is actually worth paying.

The answer depends entirely on your circumstances.

We’ve seen customers happily pay extra for door-to-door service because it saved them hours of running around, while others preferred depot transport because they were located only a few minutes from a depot and wanted to keep costs down.

Over the years, we’ve helped customers relocating interstate for work, purchasing vehicles from another state, moving family cars across Australia, and arranging transport after online vehicle purchases. Many initially enquire about Door to Door Car Transport because it sounds easier, but convenience alone shouldn’t determine your decision. What matters is whether that added convenience justifies the extra cost for your situation.

Some customers wouldn’t consider anything other than collection and delivery from their chosen locations. Others are perfectly happy using depots if it helps reduce costs. Neither option is right or wrong.

What we’ve found is that the decision rarely comes down to transport alone. It usually comes down to time, convenience, location, budget, and what else is happening in your life at the time.

In this guide, we’ll explain where the additional cost comes from, when paying extra makes practical sense, and when a depot option may actually be the smarter choice.

What Are You Actually Paying Extra For?

One of the first questions we get after sending a quote is why there’s a price difference between depot and door-to-door transport.

The simple answer is convenience.

You’re not necessarily paying for a different interstate journey. You’re paying for us to organise collection and delivery arrangements so you don’t have to spend your own time travelling to and from transport depots.

In many cases, your vehicle will still travel along the same interstate route. The additional cost comes from us organising collection from your pickup location and arranging delivery as close as possible to your destination, rather than asking you to visit transport depots at both ends.

For some customers, that extra convenience isn’t necessary. If you live close to a depot and don’t mind dropping off or collecting your vehicle yourself, depot transport can be excellent value.

However, if you’re already managing an interstate move, work commitments, flights or family responsibilities, many customers find that avoiding two separate depot visits is well worth the additional cost.

Before making a decision, it’s worth considering how much time and effort the service could save you, rather than focusing solely on the price difference.

When Door-to-Door Transport Is Usually Worth It

We don’t tell every customer to choose door-to-door transport.

In fact, there are plenty of situations where depot transport makes more sense. However, if you’re already juggling multiple commitments, the convenience can quickly outweigh the additional cost.

If you’re in the middle of a Move from Melbourne, you’ll already have enough on your plate. Between removalists, property handovers, flights, packing and utility transfers, finding time to visit transport depots isn’t always practical.

In situations like this, many people decide the additional transport cost is worth paying simply because it removes another task from an already busy moving schedule.

We see the same thing with FIFO workers, busy professionals and families moving interstate. For these customers, the value often isn’t in the transport itself—it’s in the time saved and the reduced stress of having one less thing to organise.

If saving time is more important than saving every dollar, door-to-door transport is often the option customers are happiest they chose after the move is complete.

When The Extra Cost May Not Be Worth Paying

We’ll be honest—door-to-door transport isn’t the right choice for every customer.

If you’re located close to a transport depot, have someone available to drop off and collect the vehicle, and your main goal is to keep costs as low as possible, depot transport can offer better value.

When reviewing Melbourne to Perth Transport quotes, many people automatically assume door-to-door is the better option.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn’t.

If the nearest depot is only a short drive away and the price difference matters to your budget, there may be little benefit in paying extra for collection and delivery services.

That’s why our team looks at each booking individually. Rather than pushing customers towards the more expensive option, we focus on recommending the service that makes the most sense for their location, schedule and budget.

Does Paying More Mean Faster Delivery?

Not necessarily.

This is probably the biggest misconception we see.

Many people assume that paying more for door-to-door transport means their vehicle will arrive sooner. In reality, door-to-door transport and express transport are two completely different services.

Door-to-door transport is about convenience. Express transport is about reducing transit times.

If you choose door-to-door service, you’re paying for collection and delivery arrangements that save you the hassle of visiting transport depots. It doesn’t automatically mean your vehicle will move through the network faster.

If delivery speed is important, our team can discuss the difference between standard and express transport options when providing your quote. In many cases, a customer booking express transport with depot drop-off may receive their vehicle sooner than a customer choosing a standard door-to-door service.

Before comparing prices, decide what’s most important to you. If your goal is convenience, door-to-door may be worth the extra cost. If your goal is getting the vehicle delivered as quickly as possible, the transport service level is often more important than the collection method.

Beyond Cost, Consider The Overall Experience

When customers compare quotes, it’s easy to focus entirely on the dollar figure. However, we always encourage looking at the overall transport experience as well.

We’ve seen people drive long distances to save a relatively small amount on transport costs. We’ve also seen customers happily pay extra because they were already managing a relocation and simply didn’t have the time for additional depot visits.

Neither decision is wrong.

What matters is understanding exactly what you’re paying for and deciding whether the convenience justifies the additional cost in your situation.

Regardless of which option you choose, it’s also worth taking a few minutes to understand your Car Transit Insurance coverage before booking. Knowing what protection is included can provide peace of mind throughout the journey and helps avoid surprises later.

At Move OZ Wheels, our goal isn’t to push customers towards the most expensive service. It’s to help you choose the option that best suits your budget, timeline and circumstances.

So, Which Option Should You Choose?

After comparing hundreds of transport quotes every month, we’ve found that the decision usually comes down to one thing: how much value you place on convenience.

If avoiding depot visits saves you time, reduces stress and makes your move easier, the additional cost can be worthwhile. If you’re located close to a depot and don’t mind handling the vehicle handover yourself, depot transport may offer better value.

If you’re already managing a relocation, balancing work commitments or simply want the easiest possible experience, the additional cost of door-to-door transport can be money well spent.

On the other hand, if you’re located close to a depot and don’t mind handling vehicle drop-off and collection yourself, there may be little reason to pay extra.

At Move OZ Wheels, we offer both options every day. That’s why our advice is always the same: don’t choose based on price alone. Consider your schedule, location and priorities, then choose the service that works best for your situation.
